Horse Training question by horsegirl228: When is it okay to hit a horse during training?
Went to a training session at a girls horse camp where they were teaching young girls to work on grd manners w/ young horses 2.5-4 yrs. I went with my 2.5yr old mare. Another 3.5yr old mare was a serious pill. i.e. first rubbing head on handler and not respecting space then when trainer got a hold of the horse, the horse became more pushy and agitated then she began to rear and strike. Each bout of misbehavior followed w/physical punishment starting with a yank on the lead to slap to crop slap a couple of times.
I raised the question to the trainer if physical punishment was absolutely neccessary. She said yes. It all about “domination.” Also, added that you often need to catch the horses leg and let them flip themselves over when they rear and strike.
I am raising this question to others because i have not had to hit my horse. I openly admit I am toooo emotional about my horse. So far my mare is extremely responsive and I have really enjoyed hanging around with her.
Horse Training best answer:
Answer by sara i think it’s cruel to hit a horse because it’s misbehaving it might be scared or nervous or even too excited. hitting it will probably make it rear and kick even more. flipping a horse can seriously hurt a horse and some horses have trouble getting back up

Horse Training question by Icebear847: Where can we go in northern IL for horse training to enter the field of working with horses?
My gf wants to work with horses and I am trying to find a training program or certification course in the northern IL area that we can send her to, does anyone know of anything or where I should look?
Horse Training best answer:
Answer by Tarson Personally, I don’t know of any horse training school, but you can hit the internet and see what stables are in your area and apply to work there in what ever capacity they need, or just ask them if they have any good advice or can recommend how someone could learn about horse care and training.

Horse Training question by WildHorseLover15: Does anyone have any information on head horse training?
Hi, I just recently bought a gelding that was being trained for a head horse. He has very different cues than my trail horse does, I need some information on head horse training. I would like to learn about head horses so I can understand him better. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.
Horse Training best answer:
Answer by joanne The cues for your header should be the same as for your trail horse.
To teach a horse to head, you still need the basic walk, trot & canter as well as gallop. They just have a lot of “buttons”!
Once the basics are down pat, that is when their training becomes more specific. They are trained to go from a stand still to a gallop in seconds. They are trained to back up.
It takes only subtle cues to get a good reining horse (head) to respond whereas a trail horse may need a firm cue.
There are many youtube videos and articles on this and I couldn’t pick just one or two as I am not sure exactly what you are asking. These horses are quite responsive once trained and perhaps that is where you are having issues. I have been on them before and had to be careful as to where my legs were, as the slightest touch had them going. Much different than my placid trail horse!
I managed to pull up a previous answer from another member which has good tips, such as rding your horse for awhile to learn what he knows.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090118221311AA7rSER

Horse Training question by Horse Crazy Girl : Are there any horse training stables for problem horses?
Problems like loading into trailers, or behavioral stuff; but a stable that would also do regular training, like backing a young horse or something.
I’m looking for a possible job in Massachusetts, but would consider in Connecticut.
Horse Training best answer:
Answer by Steve Be very care full who you get for this because some use electric cattle prods on them, and then they get scared and wouldn’t do nothing! Have you tried using another clammier horse to help led him into a trailer, When you load two horses together the other one can see that the other is not frighten as it goes in, so he will follow him right in. Need to train him with another horse that already knows what is going on.

Horse Training question by Saryn: What is a good price for horse training?
I have a friend who’s a very good horse trainer…trained horses basically all her life. Anyway, we live in Idaho, & I was wondering what a reasonable price would be for training a horse, say for a month.?
Thanks in advance!
She trains western only. Breaks the wildest of colts, & does it really really well.
She trains from roping to reining, to basically everything western.
Horse Training best answer:
Answer by Yohanson. If she’s good, has nice facilities, and known in the area for being good, $ 400-700. Depending on boarding and all the other things.
Saddle breaking should be more. Dressage, reining, and cutting, even more. Barrel racing, other speed events, jumping, team penning, roping, should be a tad less.
