I really want to get a chinchilla but everyone is telling me that they are really hard to take care of. Are they expensive to take care of? Do the need to go to the vet often? Do they sell chinchilla food in every pet store or is it hard to find since theyare exotic animals??? Plz help!!

Their care isn’t hard, there’s just a lot of it! You’ll need a lot of time to dedicate to caring for a chinchilla.

They’re not cheap, I can tell you that! Your initial setup will cost you at least $ 300-$ 400. Finding a suitable cage will be most costly. The one at qualitycage.com are ideal. They’re tall, secure, safe, and have wooden shelves and ledges. NEVER give a chinchilla a cage with plastic levels because they WILL chew and ingest the plastic, which is toxic. They also don’t need ramps. They are jumpers and prefer sheles rather than full on levels.

Most pet stores will sell chinchilla food but it’s normally not very nutritious. It needs to be a straight pelleted food with no seeds, nuts, fruits or other goodies in it. Mazuri is best and it’s actually carried at Petco. Oxbow is also good and is sold online. Zupreme is OK if that’s all you can find.

A yearly vet checkup is suggested just to make sure they’re healthy. Thats about it, but make sure you have money in your savings for emergencies!
